Difficult Discussions
Sometimes there are discussions that have to be had but are difficult due to their emotive nature, due to hurt or a feeling that agreement is impossible.
Most often we plough through trying to get heard (or trying to make someone agree) focusing on not making things worse or causing a flare up. When done poorly these difficult but important discussions can end up counter productive, more damage can be done and the chances of resolution damaged.
This is where having a mediator, an impartial umpire or translator can be of great help. Someone to hear out all sides of the argument. Someone to listen for clues to agreement. Sometimes, just having someone there to be accountable to is all that’s needed.
Just about any discussion where the two (or more) parties disagree can be benefited by having someone facilitate the discussion. Someone not involved, free of the history of hurt and coming in with fresh eyes and ears.
Some of the discussions that can benefit from being facilitated include:
- Relationship breakdown
- Impending divorce
- Co-parenting arrangements, access to children
- Family feuds
- Relationships damaged by money and business
If there is a difficult discussion you need to have, don’t feel you you have to do it alone.
